The players selected for our Academy took part in weekly net sessions
during the Winter months. The benefits of this one on one coaching
programme were clearly evident when the new season was underway.
Their individual progress is assessed as follows:
Luyanda Sithole. Selected for Mitchells Plain U/12
Regional squad and Standard Bank Festival as opening batsman.
Anele Mqikela Selected M/Plain u/15 Regional squad.
Lukhanyo Cetywayo Selected M/Plain u/15 Regional
squad.
Yamani Kolo Selected M/Plain u/15 Regional squad.
Now playing for ResH Senior team.
Khanyisa Jack Selected M/Plain u/15 Regional squad.
He has bowled well for 3F Senior team as well as U15 team.
The other members of the Academy have all made steady progress,
and we believe that in 2003 they also will make the breakthrough.
We approached the Sports Science Institute at Newlands for assistance
in providing visual and technical aids for our Academy players.
They invited some of our quick bowlers to take part in a study based
on bowling injuries. Our bowlers had monitors fixed to their bodies,
and these monitors were connected to the computer system. Their
bowling actions were filmed on video and a number of club coaches
were invited to study these films, and comment on possible flaws
in technique, which could result in muscle injuries. Particular
emphasis was placed on incorrect feet positions and mixed actions.
FUTURE PLANS FOR THE ACADEMY
It has always been our intention to widen the benefits of the Khayelitsha
Cricket Academy to all the regions of Khayelitsha, as well as other
parts of Cape Town, especially the disadvantaged areas. To this
end we now welcome applications from youths and girls to audition
for places. For the selection criteria, please refer
to the aims of the Academy, as set out at the top of this page.
The cost will be minimal, probably R30 per season.
